kristen's birthday

last night was interesting haha.

olga and i went to aidens for free desert and drinks at his restaurant. it was actually really awesome to be the only three people in this fancy restaurant and clothing store with glass windows on the entire side of the building overlooking the water that is only about 5 feet away. we tried on some dresses one of which i may or may not get, assuming Aiden keeps his promise of selling it to me for super cheap haha. he drove us back to maries house and olga and i got changed and then we all went to orchard house for kristen's dance party.

interesting night.

good night, interesting.

today we just got out of lecture so i have to run before we go out on our field trip. we're staying with fiana saturday night so we have to figure out the rest of the days but i am excited.

can't get that song out of my head.

talk to you soon!

Let My Baby Ride

It'd be really hard for me to explain the impression Nigel Rolfe made during his lecture yesterday.

So I recreated it.

I found the song he played and edited it together with the Zapruder film that I looked forward and backward in the same method he did.

I am going to post a link to the page, so don't click on it if you know it's going to bother you negatively.

Ideally, I'd like you to plug headphones into your computer and when the music comes on, turn it up as loud as you can and imagine that you are watching this projected onto a wall, larger than life.

it may take a bit to load because it's a large file so just wait until the bar at the bottom is full and it's all ready and hopefully it won't skip in the middle. if so, i'll just have to play it for you once i get home, but try. if it doesn't work for you in safari, try firefox, but it might work in safari, just not on my computer.

-click here if you want to see (a version of) what i saw-

not for the squeamish! but you really should force yourself to watch it.

Walking home in the rain

makes me very resentful of water pouring on my head. Actually, more like water being blown sideways into my eyes/nose/mouth/clothes. haha. But then it feels so nice to get changed in to nice dry clothes. Yet again, I forgot it was set dancing night till someone mentioned it. I walked to Blue Door and I finally got to talk to Brian on the phone, which was really nice. Franz and Harris were watching Flight of the Concords, which is a great show if you've never watched it, you should check it out. We used to watch it online every week in Paris. Logues was pretty quiet but we talked to Chris Ellis for awhile who demystified Ballyvaughan for us. He also apparently has some friends in London he might be able to get us a couch with so we don't have to spend as much money on hostels, which would be great. He said he's also considering flying out there Monday to come hang out with us. London is his favourite city. He said that there's as much happening as in New York, except much nicer and lest nerve-wrecking.

Oh, random note, I forgot if I mentioned but I got some valentine's day presents from my mom, one of which is a white squeaky-toy white rat with red/pink hearts on it. He lives in my pocket of my vest now with his little head poking out and his name is Otter and everyone loves him haha.

Anyway we got bored with Logues so we walked to the New Hotel, and Robert was working at the bar. (Not Robert who drives the shuttle to school, different Robert). They had put up a dart board so Olga started trying to do it (got the darks stuck in the wall a couple times but pretty good for her first time, real lucky). So she and Harris started a game and Harris told me to be Vanna White and be the score keeper so that was my job haha. It was actually really fun. I discovered that I much prefer gin & tonic to vodka & tonic and that Pravda totally ripped us off when we were in Dublin because there was maybe a tablespoon full of gin. They call the tonics "baby mixers" and they come in their own little tiny glass bottles.

They also played the Offspring's "Pretty Fly for a White Guy" and I think they might have played Nelly or one of those pop rap american guys.

We ended the night with some more Flight of the Conchords.

This morning was uneventful. I did a bit of painting and it turned out at least better than I thought it would considering for some unknown reason I decided to paint directly onto tracing paper. Franz really liked it and I think Harris thought it was bearable so I guess it's okay haha.

I payed for lunch in all 20 cent pieces so I can save all my cash monies for the bus to Galway/Dublin Saturday.

We're going to take the last bus home tonight so Robert can drop us off at Aiden's store. He says he has a red dress, not floor length but I should probably look at it pre-London. Tonight is Kristen's dance party, our performance piece got cancelled because the majority of people chickened out. But I sort of want to bring my paints home and get work done tonight. We'll see. I finally found my headphones and that greatly cheers me up.

I might be able to get online after Irish Studies tomorrow if we end up staying but if I don't talk to you.... See you after London!!!

05 February 2008

i can't believe

that I'm going to London on Saturday!
I'm stoked!
even though someone is being skeptical about it but you know what, this trip includes 1) me getting costumes for my photo class 2) fulfills my "Journey" prompt for my Mixed Media class, 3) I already have planned out my Time Arts project 4) Tom is fine with it because we're looking at paintings 5) Martina is also fine with it 6) We're going to the Tate and to 6 or 7 other huge galleries/museums and doing educational things. Hopefully we can go to the wartime museum because after the speaker today I feel like I need to go see their Holocaust wing. Speaking of which, we are also going to go to the Royal College of Art to re-meet up with 2 of the speakers we have had here so far, which also happen to be my 2 favourite lectures to date. 11 am and I'm sitting wide-eyed with my mouth slack and my jaw clenched shut, rock music blasting in my ears and being unable to tear my eyes away from a looped video of the Zapruder film of Kennedy being assassinated.

What a way to start your morning.

Also saw a slide show on the Polish Majdanek Concentration camp near Lublin, where I feel I need to go at some point, somehow, before I return to America. It's hard to look at, but as Nigel said, it shouldn't be forgotten. His slide show also included close up images of men mid-fall who had leaped from the world trade center towers.

anyway, I guess I digressed, but it's not like this trip is for shits and giggles. We're actually doing art-school related things 80-90% of the time, and that's good enough for me.

Laura gave us free coffee today because she had leftover she was going to throw out anyway (in the cafe) so that was nice.

Oh, so last night we went to the New Hotel so I could buy Harris his pint I owed him for helping me with my art project. We got there at half 7 so were the only ones there, which was actually nice because we spent about an hour and a half talking about art before some people from Orchard House showed up. Aiden came too and I have some nice conversation with him and Philip. They came back to Maries House with us to see if people were up. Most were watching a movie but Amber and Beki came down. Beki gave Amber a haircut so now it's short on one side and long on the other with a rat tail in the back. We went back to the Blue Door so we could watch Leprechaun in the Hood with Ice-T haha. It was pretty... well, you can imagine haha.

This morning I watched the sun rise over the mountains and it was pretty surreal.

Nigel was an amazing speaker, as I said, and I was pretty riveted the entire time.

I had lunch with Morgan and Noah, which was rather pleasant.

I'm going to meet up with Stephanie on Monday for lunch/tour and then at 7 Jaime, her boyfriend gets home from work so the 4 of us will probably go out for a bit. Fiana also said she'd text me to meet up and I think she's fairly in the same general area, so that should be nice.

well, we'll see how it all goes

i really love it when

people laugh and really mean it. you can tell the difference, or at least it seems different to me.

i also like when people smile for real, and they can't help it, and their eyes crease up a bit. it's endearing, and again, it warms my icy black little heart.

i only wish that this happened more often.

hmm

Art melts my icy black little heart.

just kidding, i don't really have an icy black little heart. but if i did, art (& Paddy) would melt it. haha

Annie

I just had a nice little chat about art and the weather with her.

She uses a lot of coasters from the pubs in her work and paints over them. The shapes are quite aesthetically pleasing to me.

On a side note, I really hope that Noah lets us watch one of the Leprechaun movies tonight.

Oh, and dad, last night before bed I had a pint... of water.

And my Time Arts piece itself:

I cant figure out how to loop it on here but just imagine that as soon as it gets back to the way it starts it does it over and over again.

Photoshoot de Harrees during my Time Arts project

Hey Harris, thanks for putting up with me
haha
No, seriously.

okay memory, go into overdrive

okay now i have to try and remember what i did since the last post, it's been so long since i've been able to get online...

fridayyyy.... i know we went to the new hotel. man, and i was doing so well remembering the details.

i intended to do my time arts project but for some reason that never happened. it was probably due to inclement weather making me unhappy. it may have been friday when harris franz and i left the studio and got scared by a giant rabbit, or maybe it was a different night. i can't remember. but eventually we went out to the new hotel for a bit and watched a movie afterwards. i don't know. friday is just going to be a black hole, i think, as far as details go. No one else remembers anything besides the snow storm. It was just a black hole. OH wait, but now that I think about it on the way back from the pub, Harris and I saw a UFO (in that we can't figure out what the hell it was because it was not A) a plane, B) a meteor/shooting star C) a satellite.) which leaves, i don't know. it was very strange, so we decided to pretend it didn't happen. Oh and now I also remember that the guys started their rap song on Friday. So maybe it wasn't as much of a black hole as it originally appeared.

on saturday amber franz shelby and tyler went to galway. harris noah drew kristen and i, and a few more, went to gort to go foodshopping for cheap. i found an appropriate red skirt in a store there that turned out to be € 100 so I told the lady nevermind. There was a little bruhaha (Spelling?) because in Aldies, they don't take american IDs so no one could get any cheaper-than-the-pub beverages except for Noah because he looks like a 30 year old irishman, so everyone just gave him money. Never a dull moment.

We got home, unpacked, waited out a rainstorm and then Harris came over so I could do my time arts project (which I will post). Then we dyed his hair brown and Olga dyed his eyebrows. Then we ran back to the blue door house so he could shower at the appropriate time (and get all the black acrylic paint off - thanks again for letting me paint on you). Supposedly there were going to be twin musicians at the new hotel, so after recording more wonderful rap, we meandered in that direction. However, no music was to be found because of the Burren Conference and lots of elderly historians. Still a good time, however. Carra and I wrote our own rap, which we will have to record one of these days. I also had a really good talk with Morgan, and Kristen. We left slightly before mostly everyone else so we could go watch Jurassic Park. Today I found out that apparently there was a little local brawl involving one of the cooks from Logues pub and some other local that resulted in a panel of glass being cracked, but unfortunately I have no more details besides that. Well, good. This place seems more human now. Before it was a little too akin to Hot Fuzz with the "nothing even slightly bad every possibly could happen here" stuff.

Now, I can't remember, have I told you about Andreas? He is the guy from northern italy (so actually sounds more germanic) that we met at the New Hotel who calls me and Harris "Eva" and "Tim." Well, we told him we were watching Jurassic Park and about half an hour later he showed up with a Carlsberg for each of us (me, Harris, Franz, Drew & himself), as well as Tay-to chips and packages of peanuts because "he didn't want to show up empty handed." Wonders will never cease. It was very nice of him.

Sunday we hung out in the kitchen, which is generally where the populace of the world congregates, in my opinion, and had nice little chitchat before Harris and I went to the Tea Junction for our weekly Pancake breakfast. The waitresses said hi and laughed because we both ordered the exact same food as last Sunday, and said see you next week. I went home and took photos back in the fairy forest with Olga. Then I discovered Shelby had gotten me a child's size reflective vest when she was in Galway which made me very happy so now my outfit for one of our performance pieces (I will tell you about it later) is complete. I walked to the studio with Lyndsey and got a bunch of work done, uploaded all of my photos and all that. It was snowing (wetly) and pouring on the walk so I was pretty soaking. We borrowed Everything Is Illuminated from Shelby and H and I made steak and salad for dinner (amazing! I have been craving steak sooo badly!) and had a nice discussion with Olga. Beki and Amber were going to watch Stardust so we finished the movie at the blue door house (their living room is more homey anyway) and Franz came home and we hung out for awhile and then I walked home and on the way I saw some lightening, which for some reason seems completely out of place in this environment, but I suppose there's really no grounds to base that surprise on.

Today I made 2 sandwiches with brioche and smoked ham, cheese, mustard and mayo(both of which I have already inhaled, they were so good) and edited my time arts piece, so that's all done. I also looked through my photos for Martina for tomorrow so now I have to edit down and pick the good ones. I also need to start painting.

But yeah, last night Beki Morgan and Noah booked their flights to Prague but Harris and I decided to wait and think about it, and luckily we did because today I found out that for the same cost as 1 person's round trip flight to prague, we could BOTH fly round trip to London. So I emailed Stephanie Leal and Fiana to see what they're up to, and he has a friend there as well, so on Saturday we are going with Morgan Noah and Beki to Dublin, catching our flight and then exploring London for a few days before flying back to Dublin, spending the afternoon, maybe hang out with Brian Kelly, and coming back to Ballyvaughan. I'm really excited. Anyway we have some long weekends in March so we could always go to Prague then, although I think we should really go to Italy and stay with relatives. That would be really wonderful. I would have liked to go back to Paris, but Thane and Harris are going there when the rest of us are in Berlin. We'll see. It depends on what flights are cheapest at the time, too. But good photos will be had, and exploring, so it'll be an adventure. It's so incredibly refreshing to just say, okay, in less than a week, let's go to this country, okay? Okay. Sort of spur of the moment. It feels good to have done that, just this once.

Anyway I am incredibly excited and I'm sure we'll have a blast.

Aiden invited us to go to his store after school sometime this week and said he'd give us free food & drinks and drive us all back to town afterwards, so we are going to have to do that ASAP.

I'm trying to think if there were any other good stories of things that happened before I upload some photos and my time arts piece.

i'm looking up hostels now so we can book ahead of time for London. Steph's place is too small for guests but she's going to meet up with us, so that'll be good.
Noah ordered the box set of all the Leprechaun movies from amazon hahaha. it's amazing. i can't wait to watch them. there's even a Leprechaun in the Hood one with Ice-T in it hahahaha. Yesss.

Okay back to work.
Well, photos, then back to work
